Beaufort County Schools

Every Student, Every Class, Every Day

Our Mission

  • It is the mission of the Beaufort County Schools Department of Exceptional Children to ensure that students with disabilities will leave our system prepared to live as independently as possible, pursue meaningful careers, make appropriate choices, and enjoy integration with the mainstrean of American culture.

We believe that all exceptional students can learn and have a right to an individualized education. They are to be provided appropriate modifications and/or accommodations in order for them to have the opportunity to perform at the level of their non-disabled peers.

All students with disabilities are individuals of equal value and should be treated with dignity and respect. They have a right to an educational experience that will allow them to become contributing members of society.

As part of the Beaufort County Schools Team, it is our job to make sure that we:

    • Consistently identify each student's individual needs and develop an IEP to meet those needs.
    • Educate students in the least restrictive environment as possible.
    • Protect the rights of students and their parents.
    • Demand accountability and strive for improvement.
    • Provide training and support for all educators so that they will be able to effectively assist students with disabilities in attaining high standards.
    • Eliminate unnecessary referrals and assure that students who no longer require special education are returned to a supportive general education set
