Personal Background

I was born in Rocky Mount, NC while living in Bath, NC and moved to the Washington area when I was 5 yrs. old. I attended local schools all through my childhood. I made it from Eastern Elementary School, to John Cotten Tayloe and John Small Elementary , to P.S. Jones Junior High, and finally Washington High School. In high school I played football and baseball for the Pam Pack.  Education has always been a big part of my life with both parents retiring from Beaufort County Schools with over 60 years of experience combined.  My father was a coach and athletic director for Washington High and Northside and my mother was a middle school teacher at P.S. Jones.

I attended East Carolina University where I majored in Physical Education while playing baseball for the Pirates. After graduating, I earned my MAED – Physical Education and Athletic Administration and MSA - Masters of School Administration, both from ECU.

I'm married to my wife, Carla Mitchell, and we have 2 children Dawson and Wayland. We live locally and our family has had great experiences with our children as students in Beaufort County schools.

Professional Background

This is my 25th year in education. I spent 10 years teaching elementary and middle school physical education and coaching at S.W. Snowden, John Cotten Tayloe, Bath Elementary, and P.S. Jones Middle, where I also served as Athletic Director.    I have had the privilege of being both Assistant Principal and Principal at John Cotten Tayloe and John Small Elementary, both here in Beaufort County for the last 15 years.

Educational Philosophy

My educational philosophy is to create as many opportunities for success as possible for the student-athletes in Beaufort County Schools. I believe that our student-athletes can accomplish great things and perform at their highest level when student, family, school, and community are all working together towards common goals.
