Employee Dress Code Procedures
- An employee’s dress or appearance may not be so unusual, inappropriate or lacking in
cleanliness that it clearly disrupts class or learning activities. The following guidelines
and procedures will be in place beginning with the 2013-2014 school year for all
employees working in Beaufort County Schools. The Superintendent will review these
procedures yearly and provide the Board of Education with recommendations.
- Sweat pants/wind suits are prohibited unless the employee is teaching a physical
education class. - Physical education teachers must wear appropriate dress when not teaching physical
education classes. - Knee-length shorts are acceptable.
- Capri length pants are acceptable.
- Form fitting spandex material, nylon, and blue jeans, are prohibited.
- Strapless and spaghetti strap garments are prohibited, unless covered by a jacket or
sweater. - T-shirts are prohibited, except on school spirit days where school spirit shirts may be
worn. - Vocational teachers must wear OSHA approved clothing when teaching shop classes.
- Employees may wear uniforms.
- More casual dress, which may include jeans, will be acceptable on teacher workdays
or other special events, as approved by the principal or immediate supervisor.
However, attire must still be appropriate dress, particularly on parent conference day. - Examples of attire considered inappropriate for school employees are listed in Item II.

- An employee's dress may not be so unusual, inappropriate or lacking in cleanliness that it
clearly disrupts classroom or learning activities. Examples of attire considered
inappropriate for school employees include but are not limited to:
- Jewelry affixed to an employee’s nose, tongue, cheek, lip, or eyebrow.
- Clothing that is provocative, revealing, indecent, vulgar, or obscene.
- Low necklines, bare midriffs and excessively tight clothing.
- Clothing which promotes alcoholic beverages, tobacco, or the use of controlled
substances by words or symbols. - Clothing that contains profanity or nudity, depicts violence, or is sexual in nature by
words or symbols. - Flip flops (i.e. Rainbows, shower shoes, beach shoes), bedroom shoes. “Thong” style
“dress” sandals are allowed. - Undergarments worn as an outer garment or any see-through clothing.
- Hats, sweatbands, bandanas, or sunglasses inside school buildings.
- Any item of clothing or jewelry that creates a disruption of the school
environment/learning activities or that poses a threat to the safety and well-being of
students or staff
