Battle of the Books
-
The purpose of the Elementary Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the elementary school level. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Even during the height of the competition, students and coaches should remember that the goal is to READ, not necessarily to win! (NCSLMA.ORG)
Battle of the Books teams are made up of 12 individuals. However, only 6 students compete at a time. The two smaller teams rotate back and forth with the change of each round. This type of grouping allows students time to rest and regroup. The team works as a whole to answer the question within the time contraints given. Each round is only 12 questions, with one question directed to each individual competing in the round. The team is awarded two points for answering with the correct title and they are awarded an additional point for naming the correct author. All authors and titles must be stated and pronounced the way they are listed on the book list or the answer will not count.
